“Je ne suis pas d’accord avec ce que vous dites, mais je me battrai jusqu’à la mort pour que vous ayez le droit de le dire”

Num tempo de tantas ideias contrárias, esta frase veio-me à memória.

Quando o tempo começava a aquecer, depois de jantar, eu e o meu pai, saíamos para um passeio a pé. Esse tempo era passado a conversar acerca de tudo e acerca de nada, não sei, ainda hoje, se os temas das conversas eram préviamente pensados, mas sei que eu delirava ter um adulto só para mim com quem conversar.

Durante bastante tempo, tema de conversa entre mim e o meu pai foi aquela frase que então era atribuída a Voltaire:

“Eu não penso como tu pensas, mas lutarei até ao fim para que tu possas pensar da maneira que pensas”

Lembro-me de lhe perguntar: “Mas porque tenho eu de lutar até ao fim para que ele possa estar contra mim?”. A resposta, nunca curta, começou com uma observação que me pôs logo a pensar: “E quem te disse que o outro está contra ti? Podem estar só a pensar de maneira diferente?”

Mais adiante, no passeio e na conversa, colocou outra questão: “Se achas que tens direito a ter a tua opinião, porque negas ao outro o direito dele?”

Acho que são duas boas perguntas…

In a time of so many opposing ideas, this phrase came to my mind.

When the weather started to warm up, after dinner, my father and I would go out for a walk. That time was spent talking about everything and about nothing — I still don’t know if the topics were planned beforehand, but I do know that I loved having an adult all to myself to talk to.

For quite a while, a recurring topic of conversation between my father and me was that phrase, which at the time was attributed to Voltaire:

“I do not think as you do, but I will fight to the end so that you may think as you wish.”

I remember asking him: “But why should I fight to the end so that someone can be against me?”

The answer, never a short one, began with an observation that immediately made me think:

“And who told you that the other person is against you? They might simply be thinking differently.”

Later on, during our walk and conversation, he posed another question:

“If you believe you have the right to your opinion, why would you deny that same right to someone else?”

I think those are two very good questions…
