My Garden

Remember those improvements Mama was thinking about making in my garden at the beginning of spring or summer? I cannot remember exactly when it started. Frankly, there were many meetings, inspections, observations and important supervisory duties involved, and I have a lot on my schedule.

Well, I am pleased to announce that the project is mostly finished!

And before anyone gets the wrong idea, I was involved throughout the entire process.

I inspected the progress.
I observed the changes.
I evaluated the placement of things.
I approved certain decisions.
And, naturally, I supervised Mama.

Now we have reached the final stage: deciding whether the garden needs a proper border of white rocks, pebbles, stones, or whatever those little things are called.

This is where my expertise becomes particularly important.

Mama needs my input.

Unfortunately, it has been raining.

And that is a problem.

Not because we don’t need the rain. We absolutely do! In fact, Mama says the rain is part of the testing process. We need to see how everything behaves when the ground gets wet, how the water moves, how The Basin holds up, and whether anything needs to be adjusted.

Which means, naturally, that I need to inspect my garden after the rain.

There is just one small problem.

Mama won’t let me outside.

Why?

Would you ask?

Because I certainly did.

And the answer was:

“Smores, everything is wet. You will be uncomfortable, and you might go out and about. No!”

Excuse me?!

She is not talking about Mr. Jack, the distracted one.

She is talking about ME.

The Garden Inspector.

The Chief Architect.

The Landscape Engineer.

The Decorative Consultant.

The one who has been involved in this entire operation from the very beginning.

And now, when my expertise is needed most, I have been grounded by weather.

I am a little offended.

Although… I know it comes from a place of love. Mama is trying to protect me in her very human, slightly clumsy way.

Still.

I have work to do.

My garden is looking very pretty, and I am particularly curious to see whether the birds will discover The Basin next year. I have already begun considering its potential as a bird-watching destination, although I have not yet decided whether the bird traffic will meet my standards.

I have even been provided with my very own bucket of stones, rocks, pebbles, Rochester… whatever these things are called.

Clearly, I have found my calling.

Engineering.

Architecture.

Landscape design.

Decoration.

Perhaps I should start my own company.

Flip’s Cat Fardens has a certain ring to it.

I could be the founder, chief designer and principal inspector.

Mama can be my assistant.

Excuse me…

It appears Jack is trying to say something.

“Hey, Smores, don’t forget that you need a reporter. I am ready!”

Fine.

You may report.

But remember who is in charge of the garden.

Me.

O Meu Jardim

Observei as alterações.
Avaliei a colocação de cada coisa.
Aprovei determinadas decisões.
E, naturalmente, supervisionei a Mamã.

A Mamã não me deixa sair.

Porquê?

Querem perguntar?

Eu também perguntei.

E a resposta foi:

“Smores, está tudo molhado. Vais ficar desconfortável e podes ir passear por aí. Não!”

Desculpe?!

A Inspectora do Jardim.

A Arquitecta-Chefe.

A Engenheira Paisagista.

Engenharia.

Arquitectura.

Paisagismo.

Decoração.

Talvez devesse abrir a minha própria empresa.

Eu estou pronto!”

Está bem.

Podes fazer a reportagem.

Eu.
