šŸ Chasing Autumn’s Glow in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania

Fall has this effect on me: it makes me chase the colors before they fade. It’s the last hurrah before the quiet of winter covers everything in white. The days grow shorter, the light softens, and I find myself looking for excuses to go out with my camera—to capture those fleeting, fiery shades of yellow, orange, and red before they vanish.

But autumn can be such a tease. One moment, the trees are stubbornly green, and the next—poof!—the colors have peaked, leaving bare branches and crunchy leaves underfoot. Add a few cold or rainy days into the mix, and outdoor excursions start to lose their charm. Meanwhile, my garden begins its own transformation; as everything changes outside, so does my little world at home. The plants need trimming, bulbs need planting, and somehow autumn always feels like both an ending and a beginning.

If I could make one wish for this season, it would be simple: let autumn linger a little longer.

A New Destination Each Fall

Every year, I try to visit a new place to admire the fall colors—a small tradition that keeps the season special. This year’s choice was Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, a town that seems as though it was painted for autumn. Nestled in the Pocono Mountains, it’s full of history, charm, and winding streets lined with old Victorian houses.

October in Jim Thorpe means festival time! Every weekend of the month, the town fills with music, food, crafts, and cheerful visitors celebrating the Fall Foliage Festival. It’s lively and full of energy—but also quite busy—so if you plan to go, I highly recommend arriving early to find parking.

A little tip: download the Jim Thorpe App before your trip. It’s an excellent tool to help you plan ahead and make the most of your visit. You can use it to check parking availability, locate attractions, find dining spots, and even discover local events or tours happening while you’re there. Combined with the parking app, it really makes exploring smoother and more enjoyable—so you can focus on what truly matters: the experience.

All Aboard the Foliage Train Ride

One of the highlights of my visit was taking the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, often called the Foliage Train Ride during the fall season. There’s something timeless about boarding a vintage train, hearing the soft rumble of the tracks, and watching the landscape unfold as you glide through valleys and along the river.

Because it was a warm day and I wanted to take photos, I chose an open-air carriage—and it was perfect. The fresh breeze, the sound of leaves rustling as we passed, and the soft light made every photo feel alive. If I had gone a week or two later, the colors might have been even more vibrant, but that’s the beauty of fall: it changes daily, and you never know what moment you’ll get.

The ride itself is first-come, first-served during foliage season, but trains run throughout the year, so you can always plan ahead and book your seats for a different season, too.

A Town With a Story

Jim Thorpe isn’t just beautiful—it’s fascinating. The town’s history stretches back to the 1800s, when it was founded as Mauch Chunk, a Lenape phrase meaning ā€œBear Placeā€ or ā€œBear Mountain.ā€ It thrived as a coal-mining and transportation hub, built around the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company.

In the mid-1900s, two neighboring towns—Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk—decided to merge, and they renamed the new borough Jim Thorpe in honor of one of America’s greatest athletes, James Francis Thorpe. A member of the Sac and Fox Nation, Jim Thorpe made history as the first Native American to win Olympic gold medals for the United States. He was also a professional football, baseball, and basketball player—a true legend of athletic versatility.

Though he never actually visited the town named after him, his story has become part of its identity, symbolizing perseverance, excellence, and pride. Today, visitors can see his memorial site in town, surrounded by beautiful stonework and plaques celebrating his achievements.

Because of its steep hills, lush surroundings, and elegant Victorian architecture, Jim Thorpe earned the nickname ā€œThe Switzerland of America.ā€ And once you see it, you’ll understand why—it feels like a painting come to life, especially in autumn.

Things to See and Do

Jim Thorpe is a place best enjoyed at a gentle pace. The town is walkable, filled with boutique shops, cozy cafĆ©s, and art galleries showcasing local talent. Strolling down Broadway, you’ll pass beautifully preserved buildings that seem to whisper stories of another era.

If you love the outdoors, there’s more waiting beyond the town center. You can walk or cycle along the Lehigh Gorge Trail, which follows the river and offers incredible views—especially during foliage season. For panoramic sights, consider driving or hiking up to the Flagstaff Mountain overlook or the Mount Pisgah Trail. Both offer postcard-worthy views of the valley below.

And when you’re ready for a little rest, find a cafĆ© terrace, order something warm, and watch the world go by. It’s the kind of town that invites you to slow down and simply be present.

A Final Thought

Every fall, I promise myself to make time—to see the colors, to walk among the trees, to let the season sink in before it slips away. Visiting Jim Thorpe was exactly that: a gentle reminder that beauty often asks us to pause.

I didn’t have enough time to see it all—there were still corners of the town left unexplored, trails I didn’t get to walk, and views I’d love to capture in a different light. So yes, I’m already planning to go back. Next time, I’ll stay a little longer, wander a little slower, and let the charm of Jim Thorpe reveal even more of its magic.

If you go, take your time. Arrive early, wander slowly, and let your camera (and your heart) capture the glow before it fades. Because soon enough, the cold white hush of winter will arrive—and these moments, painted in autumn gold, will warm you until the colors return again.
