Because it was a warm day and I wanted to take photos, I chose an open-air carriage—and it was perfect. If I had gone a week or two later, the colors might have been even more vibrant, but that’s the beauty of fall: it changes daily, and you never know what moment you’ll get.

Jim Thorpe isn’t just beautiful—it’s fascinating. The town’s history stretches back to the 1800s, when it was founded as Mauch Chunk, a Lenape phrase meaning “Bear Place” or “Bear Mountain.” It thrived as a coal-mining and transportation hub, built around the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company.

In the mid-1900s, two neighboring towns—Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk—decided to merge, and they renamed the new borough Jim Thorpe in honor of one of America’s greatest athletes, James Francis Thorpe. A member of the Sac and Fox Nation, Jim Thorpe made history as the first Native American to win Olympic gold medals for the United States. He was also a professional football, baseball, and basketball player—a true legend of athletic versatility.

Though he never actually visited the town named after him, his story has become part of its identity, symbolizing perseverance, excellence, and pride. Today, visitors can see his memorial site in town, surrounded by beautiful stonework and plaques celebrating his achievements.

Because of its steep hills, lush surroundings, and elegant Victorian architecture, Jim Thorpe earned the nickname “The Switzerland of America.” And once you see it, you’ll understand why—it feels like a painting come to life, especially in autumn.

E claro, há também o meu próprio jardim: à medida que tudo muda lá fora, também muda o meu pequeno mundo dentro de casa e exige atenção. O Outono deveria durar mais, com as suas cores, para que pudéssemos desfrutar e passar mais tempo rodeados pelos tons de amarelo, laranja e vermelho.

Um Destino Diferente Todos os Anos

Todos os anos tento ir a um local diferente para apreciar as cores do Outono, uma pequena tradição que mantém esta estação especial. Este ano, a escolha foi Jim Thorpe, Pensilvânia, uma cidade que parece ter sido pintada para o outono. Há algo intemporal em embarcar num comboio antigo, ouvir o suave ruído das carruagens e ver a paisagem a desenrolar-se enquanto deslizamos pelos vales e ao longo do rio.

Como o dia estava quente e eu queria tirar fotografias, escolhi um vagão ao ar livre e foi perfeito. A brisa fresca, o som das folhas a mexer enquanto passávamos e a luz suave fizeram com que cada fotografia parecesse viva. Se tivesse ido uma ou duas semanas mais tarde, as cores talvez estivessem ainda mais vibrantes, mas esta é a beleza do Outono: muda todos os dia e nunca sabemos que momento vamos encontrar.

O passeio funciona por ordem de chegada durante a época de folhagem, mas existem comboios durante todo o ano, por isso podes sempre planear com antecedência e reservar lugares noutra altura, se preferires.

Jim Thorpe é uma cidade para desfrutar com calma. É possível passear a pé, explorando lojas de artesanato, cafés acolhedores e galerias de arte. Caminhar pela Broadway é como voltar no tempo, passando por edifícios históricos que parecem sussurrar histórias de outros tempos.

Para os amantes da natureza, há trilhos fantásticos à volta da cidade. Podes caminhar ou pedalar pelo Lehigh Gorge Trail, que segue o rio e oferece vistas deslumbrantes — especialmente durante a época da folhagem. Para panorâmicas ainda mais impressionantes, considera subir até ao miradouro de Flagstaff Mountain ou fazer o Mount Pisgah Trail. Ambos oferecem vistas dignas de cartão-postal do vale abaixo.
