I went to the post office to pick up a package. Things from a mother to a daughter who is far away, but that insist on proving that even distance cannot keep away “the little gifts” from those we love.
As you can easily imagine, every time I go to pick up a package, my feelings are divided between joy and anticipation. On the way there, I try to keep a smile from spreading across my face. What is in the heart can only be seen with the eyes of the heart, can’t it?
I am “in a hurry” to receive the surprise, so I am happy to see that there is no line: it’s just me!
I prepare my identification and the attempted-delivery notice. I wait for them to look at me and, when it is my turn, I step forward with my best smile. After saying good afternoon, I hand over the documents, but my identification is ignored.
The important thing is knowing what to hand over.
The package comes in my direction and stops on the counter. They scan the barcode and ask me for the last name of the person who sent me the package.
I think: “Now they are going to ask for my identification and check the code card again…” and, once again, I hold out the document.
The answer, however, was surprisingly unexpected:
“I don’t need that. You really do look like the photograph, but since I don’t know the person, who knows if it’s actually yours!”
After a wait that seemed much longer than the actual amount of time, during which the package appeared and disappeared like a game of hide-and-seek, and after a few conclusions that, being so absurd, almost began to make sense, the wait finally came to an end.
And I, on my way home, already holding the package in my hands, think that maybe they have a point…

MEMÓRIAS – A ENCOMENDA
Penso: “Agora vão pedir-me a identificação e voltar a verificar o cartão de código…” e, novamente, estendo o documento…
